Ethnic Studies

What are ethnic studies courses?

Ethnic Studies courses place the stories of people of color at the center of the curriculum. The goal is critical engagement with content ignored or minimized in the state standards, culturally sustaining pedagogy, community connections, and social action. Courses are interdisciplinary, typically combining history, literature, economics, sociology, anthropology, and political science.   Ethnic studies began at the university level in response to demands from students for a more culturally relevant curriculum and in recent years has grown in the K-12 curriculum.
